Lynchburg Hillcats announce contest to rename franchise
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - After 21 years of suiting up as the Hillcats, professional baseball players in Lynchburg will soon have a new team name.
On Tuesday, the minor league affiliate of the Cleveland Indians announced a "Name The Team" contest, with the winning name being put in place in time for the 2017 Carolina League season.
According to team president Chris Jones, the new name should "...capture the rich history of Lynchburg and our baseball tradition."
On Facebook, the franchise has noted that "The Hillcats" is still an option, if that is the winning vote from the fans. Lynchburg's baseball team has been named the Hillcats since 1995, and survived through affiliations with the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, and Cleveland Indians.
Jones says he's looking forward to hearing ideas from Lynchburg's fans, saying "We have a very loyal and passionate fanbase. We hope they will tap into their creative side to suggest some unique and imaginative names that will be associated with Lynchburg baseball for years to come. "
