Fox Puss Invitational begins 3-day run at Boonsboro

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - It's the first weekend in May, that means it's the annual Fox Puss Invitational Golf Tournament at Boonsboro Country Club.

West Virginia's Sam O'Dell is the defending champion, O'Dell playing with 6-time Fox Puss champion Keith Decker of Martinsville and 2016 Fox Puss champ and Virginia Tech freshman golfer Connor Burgess.

O'Dell is one of two golfers just one shot behind leader David Schmidt of Wytheville after day one, Schmidt opened with a 3-under 68.

O'Dell ran in a birdie putt at 9 en route to his 2-under 69, he's tied at 69 with Roanoke's Justin Young.

Decker had a nice up-and-down at 9 to save his par, the Martinsville golfer is just two shots out of the lead at 1-under 70. Decker is tied for fourth with two-time Fox Puss champ Steven Liebler of South Carolina.

Virginia Tech freshman golfer Connor Burgess opened with a 2-over 73, he's five back.

UVa freshman Jimmie Massie is in a group at 75.

Schmidt has the first day lead at 3-under 68, O'Dell and Young are tied for second at 69. Then it's Decker and Liebler at 70.

Play continues through Sunday at Boonsboro.
