17 LU teams to remain in Big South Conference as football moves to FBS
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - While the Liberty University football team is moving to FBS, some of the other teams are staying within the Big South Conference.
Tyler Falwell with the university tweeted out part of a news release from the Big South Conference.
The release says LU will withdraw from the conference as a full member effective June 30, 2019, and will begin its associate membership July 1.
This means 17 of the athletic teams will be in the Big South Conference.
"Liberty University is a long-standing member of the Big South that has contributed to the success of the Conference in many ways," Mary Grant, Big South Conference President and UNC Asheville commented. "We believe we reached a good outcome that provides continued opportunities for Liberty's student-athletes while adhering to the by-laws of that govern the conference."
LU Athletic Director Ian McCaw added the university is grateful to extend the membership while making the football team an FBS member.
