World War II-era plane crashes at SML airport, no injuries
MONETA, Va. (WSET) -- The owner of the Smith Mountain Lake airport confirms a plane crashed at the airport shortly around 4:40 p.m. Thursday, July 5.
They said the plane went off the runway and hit the trees nearby.
There was no fire and thankfully, there were no injuries.
Right now, airport crews are working with authorities to clean up the damage.
Moe Bazazan, the airport's owner, said the plane dates back to World War II and the owner of the plane was the only one on board during the crash.
The owner, Daniel Haug from Culpeper, said he was in town for a veteran event this weekend.
