LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- The Lynchburg Chapter of Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities held its 49th annual Humanitarian Awards dinner at Lynchburg College Wednesday.

The ceremony honors those who work in the local community to promote respect and understanding among people of diverse backgrounds.

WSET's very own Noreen Turyn was the Emcee of the event. Six awards were presented including the statewide Distinguished Virginian Award.

It was given to Elliot and Rosel Schewel for their decades long contributions to Lynchburg as well as the state.

"It's just such and honor and I'm still in sort of disbelief," said Elliot Schewel. The Schewels are board members of both Beacon of Hope and Lynchburg College.
