Va. mother charged after 1-year-old found face down in bathtub, died at hospital
MATTHEWS Co., Va. (WSET) -- A mother of a one-year-old found face down in a bathtub Thursday, February 1 is facing multiple charges.
According to the Matthews County Sheriff's Office, Miranda Dawn Gilbert was taken into custody and charged with felony homicide to wit child abuse and neglect, and three counts of felony child abuse and neglect.
The sheriff's office said deputies responded to John Clayton Memorial Highway Thursday around 12:30 p.m. after the mother reported her one-year-old was unresponsive and scalded in a bathtub.
Officials said the child was taken to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
Gilbert told authorities that the child had been left alone in the bathtub and when she returned the hot water was running and the one-year-old was face down in the tub.
Matthews County Social Services has been called in to investigate.
Investigators said the one-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arriving and his body has now been taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond for an autopsy.
The sheriff's office said the child's death is an ongoing investigation.
