Sheriff's Office: 19-year-old charged with murdering father
GLADYS, Va. (WSET) - A 19-year-old man is facing charges after the Campbell County Sheriff's Office says he shot and killed his father Wednesday night.
Police officials received reports of a shots fired from the 300 block of Collins Ferry Road in Gladys at 9:38 p.m. .
First responders discovered John Wesley Staples II, 40, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
Neighbors in the area say they're shocked about what happened.
"It's crazy, we live in a small community, we weren't expecting all this around Christmas," Jessica Gilliel said.
The Campbell County Sheriff's Office believes this stemmed from a domestic dispute.
After gathering evidence at the scene, police arrested Tyler Wesley Staples, 19.
He was taken to the Campbell County Adult Detention Center where he is being held without bond on charges of second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
CORRECTION: in our news broadcast at 6 p.m. Thursday we said that Staples was released from jail on October 20th, 2017. Blue Ridge Regional Jail officials clarified that information for us. They explained because of overcrowding Staples was released from the Campbell County Detention Center on Oct. 20th and transferred to the Amherst County Adult Detention Center. He was then released Nov. 30th
