LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Thomas Road Baptist Church said its pastor, Jonathan Falwell, is stuck in the Caribbean in the midst of one of the most dangerous hurricanes to form in the Atlantic.

Pastor Jonathan took his wife, Shari, to St. Martin for their 25th wedding anniversary.

They were scheduled to return on Tuesday, but instead the airlines have canceled flights and the airport is closed as the islands prepare for Hurricane Irma.

Thomas Road said Pastor Jonathan and Shari are in an emergency shelter, along with hundreds of others, and will stay there through the storm.

"Please pray for them as well as the thousands of others currently in the path of this potentially destructive storm as it is forecast to be extremely powerful. Let us pray fervently for all those involved," Thomas Road wrote on Facebook.
