GLADE SPRING, Va. — An 83-year-old substitute teacher is now in intensive care after being pushed by what police called an agitated student at Patrick Henry High School.
Sheriff Fred Newman said the school's resource officer responded to the disturbance just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday inside a classroom where a 17-year-old student had shoved the teacher backwards when he was trying to leave the area.
Newman's report said the teen was already being difficult before the teacher handed out an assignment, causing the student to stand up and receive a warning to sit back down from the teacher.
Investigators said this when the juvenile walked around the instructor and shoved him, causing the teacher to strike his head on a desk- resulting in internal bleeding and a gash big enough to require stitches.
The teacher was taken to an area hospital for treatment while the 17-year-old was charged with malicious wounding and transported to the Highlands Detention Center.
