Seven suspected drug dealers arrested as part of investigation in Amherst Co.

AMHERST Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Amherst County Sheriff's Office said seven suspected drug dealers have been indicted after a special investigation.

They said investigators began Operation Cloudburst Wednesday morning in an effort to serve grand jury indictment against the suspected drug dealers with the help of the Campbell County Sheriff's Office.

So far, seven have been arrested:

  • Layne Aaron Merchant, 33, of Monroe – Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II)
  • Marcus Leighton Jerome, 38, of Madison Heights – Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II) (4x)
  • Maurice Haskins, 39, of Lynchburg - Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II) (4x)
  • Lisa Marie McFadden, 29, of Evington - Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II)
  • Michael Junior Pennell, 36, of Keysville - Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II) (5x)
  • Jeffery Allen Dudley, 38, of Madison Heights - Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II)
  • Victoria Marie Sumpolec, 24, of Appomattox - Distribution of Controlled Substance (Schedule I or II)

The sheriff's office said the indictments represent several months of work by Amherst County Narcotics investigators and the Central Virginia Drug and Gang Task Force.

Amherst County Sheriff Viar said he will continue to combat drug activity in Amherst County and encourages all citizens to report suspected illegal drug activity to the drug tip line at 434-946-7585.
