They received Virginia's first baby American black bear of 2021.

The bear was found in Floyd County eating goat feed. After carefully watching the baby from a distance for hours, the mother never returned.

With cooler nighttime temperatures, the Department of Wildlife Resources brought the baby to the center so it would not freeze.

The bear will be transferred to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro over the weekend.

It is important to note, it is abnormal for a bear cub of this size to be out of the den this early in life.
