DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- Virginia ranks 5th in the country for the number of hate groups in the state, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Only California, Florida, New York, and Texas have more.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there are 42 hate groups in Virginia and several are located in local communities.

They list the KKK in Danville, the Rebel Brigade Knights in Martinsville, Christian Action Network in Forest, and Wolves of Vinland in Lynchburg.

There was no phone number listed for the KKK in Danville, but the North Carolina chapter had a voicemail saying, "We see white patriots such as James Fields Jr., age 20, taking his car and running over nine communist, antifascist, killing one [expletive] lover named Heather Hyer,"

It went on to say that Fields, Jr. "hailed victory" in the deadly accident in Charlottesville.

"So that men like you who made the great white race strong and will be strong again," it continued.

The KKK North Carolina chapter did call back and said it considers the Southern Poverty Law Center a communist organization and it should be labeled a terrorist group and don't consider themselves a hate group, but a civil rights group.

After calling the number listed for the Rebel Brigade Knights, the person answered saying it was the wrong number.

The person who answered the phone for the Christian Action Network hung up.

There was no number listed for the Wolves of Vinland.

The Danville Police Department says they are aware of hate groups in the area.

"Try to monitor some of these groups. Try to get a feel for what's going on.," said Lt. Michael Wallace with the Danville Police Dept. "If you violate the law, then we have to take action on that."

They monitor the groups utilizing social media and encouraging peaceful protesting.
