LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) –- Liberty University Head Football Coach Turner Gill is stepping down as the Flames head football coach, and retiring from coaching football, effective immediately.

A school release says a national search for the ninth head coach in the history of the program has started.

Gill completed his seventh season as Liberty’s head football coach on Saturday, ending his tenure on Liberty Mountain with a 47-35 record and his career a 72-84 overall head coaching record.

There hasn't been any speculation as to who the new coach will be, but one Lynchburg star said he would consider it if it were offered to him.

Patrick Kelly tweeted at Rashad Jennings a quote that Jennings tweeted in January.

Jennings wrote "...the only coaching position I would even consider right now would be Head Coach of Liberty University's football" on January 10.

Nearly 11 months later, Jennings confirms it's still a true statement.

Rashad started playing football in high school as a fifth-string quarter back, but overcame adversity to later play at LCA, Liberty University, and then the NFL.

He also holds a football camp every summer in Lynchburg, called 'Camp 180.'

The 'Dancing with the Stars' champion and author also joined four other elite Flames athletes in the 2018 Liberty athletics Hall of Fame class.
