Police: Two taken to hospital after head-on collision in Amherst County
MONELISON, Va. (WSET) -- Two people were sent to the hospital after a head-on collision in Amherst County Friday afternoon.
Virginia State Police, the Amherst County Sheriff's Office, and Monelison Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash on Dillard Road around noon, January 5.
Police said an 86-year-old driver was going down Dillard Road in the Southbound lane when he crossed the center line into the northbound lane.
As he crossed the center line, police said a 26-year-old driver tried to swerve out of the way, but ended up hitting the other vehicle head-on.
As you can see in the photos, the crash caused one of the vehicles to flip.
Both drivers were taken to the hospital.
The 86-year-old driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance, the 26-year-old driver was taken to the hospital by a family member.
Police said the 86-year-old driver was still in the hospital around 3:15 p.m., but the other driver had already been released.
The 86-year-old has been charged with failure to maintain right of center.
Police said the accident is an ongoing investigation.
