Police: Two killed, two seriously injured in local head-on collision


BUCHANAN Co., Va. (WSET) - State Police are investigating a crash that happened Sunday in Buchanan County that left two people dead and sent two to the hospital with injuries.

Police say an 81-year-old man from Grundy was driving a pickup truck on Route 460 East when he crossed the center line and hit a compact SUV head-on just before 12:45 p.m. near Route 83.

According to police, the impact of the crash caused the pickup truck to catch fire, destroying it.

Police say the 81-year-old man was taken to Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee with life-threatening injuries.

State Police say his passenger, Billy Joe Carter, 75, of Grundy was taken to Buchanan General Hospital. According to police, he died shortly after arriving.

Police say the driver of the compact SUV, a 74-year-old woman from Grundy was taken to Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn. with serious injuries.

According to police, her passenger, Charles V. Baker, 52, of Grundy, died at the scene.

State Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
