Police: Missing man found dead in Pittsylvania County

PITTSYLVANIA Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office said a missing man has been found dead.

Officials said search teams found James Gianakos, 81, in a wooded area in the 2100 block of Oak hill Road around 11 a.m. Saturday.

The sheriff's office, along with several search and rescue agencies, organized a follow-up search when he was found; search teams included Angel Search and Rescue, Amherst County Search and Rescue, Black Diamond Search and Rescue, Blue and Grey Search and Rescue, Dogs East, K-9 Alert Search and Rescue, Search and Rescue Training Institute and the Southwest Virginia Mountain Rescue Group.

Investigators said there were no signs of foul play and the body is being sent to the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke to determine the exact cause of death.

They said there were three previous searches that were held in attempt to locate Gianakos.

Gianakos was last seen Sunday, August 27 at 2141 Oak Hill Road in Cascade where the Thompson Home is located. This is where people come for rehabilitation.

Online records confirm he was a registered sex offender in Virginia for attempted rape.
