Police investigate non-fatal officer-involved shooting


ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WSET) -- Virginia State Police say a Rocky Mount officer shot a man Saturday night.

They say shortly before midnight an officer located an adult male with a pending emergency custody order.

Police say the officer stopped the man's vehicle at the Rocky Mount Plaza shopping center on Tanyard Road.

According to officials, as the officer approached the person of interest, the man began physically assaulting the officer.

They say during the altercation the officer fired at the man, striking him and ending the assault.

Police say the man was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

They say the officer was also transported to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained in the assault.

The officer has been treated and released.

Police say the officer is on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the inquiry, per standard department police.

This investigation is ongoing.
