Police: 72-year-old man in critical condition after hit and run, suspect at large

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - Lynchburg Police are investigating a hit and run that send a pedestrian to the hospital Saturday morning.

Lynchburg Fire & EMS responded to the 3700 block of Campbell Avenue just after 10 a.m. for the hit and run.

Police say the suspect vehicle had Virginia tags and fled the scene in the direction of Route 460.

Police say the suspected driver entered the Speedway gas station in that block of Campbell Avenue, got in his car, and made a left onto Campbell Avenue heading toward Flordia Avenue.

It was there police say the victim was trying to cross the road, and was hit by the vehicle.

According to police, the victim rolled onto the hood before being thrown off the vehicle into the street and the suspect stopped.

They say the suspect backed up and quickly drove around the victim.

Police have identified the victim as 72-year-old Fred Donovan of Lynchburg.

They say he's in the hospital in critical condition.

Police are investigating this incident and say charges are pending.
