Police: Driver charged after Amtrak train collides with car in Amherst

AMHERST, Va. (WSET) -- A car was totaled late Tuesday night after it was hit by a train in Amherst.

The Amherst Police Department said Anthony James Bonndville was following his GPS when he accidentally made a right turn onto the railroad tracks near Depot Street and got a short distance along the tracks when he bottomed out and got stuck.

He said he heard the train coming and was able to get out of his vehicle, but the train hit it around 11:30 p.m.

There were no injuries, but the car is totaled.

The Amtrak train was also damaged on the plow and engine, after getting checked out it was able to continue on down the tracks.

Bonndville has been charged with trespassing on railroad tracks.

There were no train delays due to the crash.
