LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- According to Virginia State Police, the Sunday after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest travel days of the year.
They said that when there are more cars on the road, the likelihood of accident rises.
In order to combat the accidents, police had 75% of their staff monitoring the roads this week.
"We've been focusing on having a presence being out there. We're focusing on speeders and distracted driving. Those are our two major focal points as well as impaired driving, making sure people are buckled up," said T.W. Fridley of state police.
Police shared that traffic gets slower as it gets later.
They said roads were the busiest between 9 and 10 a.m.
Police credited their presence for the lack of accidents this year.
