Police: 4 arrested after trying to cash fake check, leading police on chase in Bedford


    BEDFORD Co., Va. (WSET) -- Bedford Police have arrested multiple people in connection with fraud in several Union Bank locations.

    They said they were notified around 11 a.m. Wednesday of a report of a woman attempting to cash a check that was believed to be fraudulent. The location was the Union Bank Drive-thru in the 100-block of W. Main Street in the Town of Bedford.

    According to police, a woman in the driver's seat was trying to cash the check.

    They said the teller delayed the suspect as another employee called 911.

    Police said a Bedford officer arrived and approached the woman's vehicle. When he spoke to her, she drove off and the officer pursued.

    According to police, a man jumped from the vehicle as it was traveling at a high speed on Washington Street.

    Officers said they continued to pursue the vehicle and it was stopped at Tiger Trail and Burks Hill Rd.

    Police said the driver, Antonia Teresa Altavilla, 27, of Florida, was arrested and charged with disregarding police commands to stop and displaying fictitious license plates.

    Another woman was arrested, police said. August Faith Watkins, 18, of Florida was charged with out of state felony fugitive and false identity to law enforcement.

    According to police, the two men who fled were located in Lynchburg.

    The case related to the fraudulent checks being cashed is still under investigation.

    Police said the four individuals are suspects in crimes spanning across the state.
