Police: 18-year-old shot man after verbal fight escalated

ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) -- The Roanoke Police Department said a 40-year-old has died after a shooting Friday evening in Roanoke.

Police responded to the 2100 block of Colgate Street in reference to reports of a person with a gunshot wound around 9:30 p.m.

When they got there, they found Jeremy Altman with a gunshot wound, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said their investigation indicates the victim was in a verbal fight with 18-year-old Laron Simmons, which escalated into the shooting.

They said the two men did know each other.

Simmons is charged with second degree murder.

Police said this is an ongoing investigation.
