PITTSYLVANIA Co., Va. (WSET) -- Officials say a freak accident in Pittsylvania County left a man dead and woman seriously injured.

Police said an older couple had been considered missing since Thursday, but were found Tuesday morning just after 11:00 a.m. off an embankment.

Brosville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kevin Farris said the couple was backing out of their driveway in the 2500 block of Stoney Mill School Road when they went over an embankment.

The chief said the crash happened last Thursday. On Tuesday morning a deputy was searching the area near their home and located tracks that lead to their car about 50-to-60 yards from the road.

Chief Farris said the car was covered in bush and was hard to see from the road.

The chief said the man died trying to find help. The woman survived, but was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Firefighters were able to bring the woman to safety by using stretcher hitched to a truck.
