Outer Banks county launches new beach alert system

KITTY HAWK, NC. (WSET) -- Tropical Storm Chris is brewing in the Atlantic.

While it isn't expected to make landfall, the surf along the coast could be dangerous over the next several days with rip currents and high waves.

If you're heading to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Dare County has released a new alert system for ocean conditions on your phone.

It gives you information about high and low tides, flag, and safety warnings.

The information comes from both the National Weather Service and lifeguards watching current conditions.

A Dare County official says it's important to know conditions ahead of time.

"When a person comes to the beach, they need to know what they are experiencing before they get here so they make proper decisions to whether or not to bring their flotation or do the things they need to do to ensure their safety when they are at the beach," Drew Pearson said.
