GRETNA, Va. (WSET) -- A member of the Gretna Rescue Squad saved a man from his burning truck Tuesday night.

Fire officials said Pernice White was driving on Boxwood Road around 8 p.m. when she came across the accident.

They said the pick-up truck was on fire and was wedged in the woods and the driver was trapped inside.

According to fire officials, White rushed in to help in spite of being without equipment or fire protective gear and they said she managed to extricate the man from the vehicle and drag him to safety.

"She went above and beyond and will be recognized by the departments for her action," said Chief Chad Hogan.

Pittsylvania County dispatchers dispatched fire and rescue units to the Boxwood Road location shortly after 8 p.m.

Gretna fire and rescue units arrived on scene shortly after.

The man was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
