BONSACK, Va. (WSET) - A W.E.L. employee was killed Thursday in an "unfortunate, and tragic" workplace accident in Bonsack, according to officials with the company.

Officials say Charles McFadden died during a structure demolition project.

McFadden worked for the company for nine years, according to the company's press release.

A spokeman calls the accident that happened during a structure demolition project tragic and unfortunate.

"Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family and friends during this difficult time," the press release reads.

Jean McCormick, who owns a general store with her husband in Appomattox County said McFadden and his father stopped in the general store often.

"It was just, it's unreal," she said.

Dennis Drinkard says the family is well known in the small community.

"His granddaddy went to school with me, his mama is a good close friend of ours," he said.

Drinkard says he's thinks work related incidents are far too common.

"Another bad incident in a plant, connected with work related," Drinkard said. "These things happen, we don't know why, we've lost a lot of good young people."

Drinkard said he knows the loss will be felt all over and he hopes to know more details soon.
