Police: One killed, two hurt in head on-collision in Franklin Co.

UPDATE: 3:20 p.m.

State Police have identified the person who was killed in a crash in Franklin County Friday.

Police said a vehicle was driving west on Route 40, .75 miles west of Colonial Turnpike, when it crossed the center line and hit a truck.

John R. Bates, of Callaway, was driving the vehicle and died at the scene; he was wearing his seatbelet.

The truck was driven by Ronald E. Clock, 53, of Rocky Mount, who was also wearing his seatbelt, and was airlifted to the hospital for his injuries. A passenger in the truck was not wearing his seatbelt and was also seriously injured.

The State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called to assist.

The crash remains under investigation.


FRANKLIN Co., Va. (WSET) - State Police say one person is dead after a head-on collision in Franklin County.

Police say the crash happened on Route 40 East near Colonial Turnpike Friday morning.

State Police got the call just before 7:30 a.m.

They say the identity of the person killed has not been released at this time because the family has not yet been notified.

State Police were unable to confirm if there were other injuries.

At this time, police say speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

That stretch of road was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Traffic was able to flow normally around 10:30 a.m.
