One arrested after deadly road rage shooting on Blue Ridge Parkway

UPDATE: 4:45 p.m.

Roanoke, VA (WSET - One man is now dead according to the National Park Service after a road rage shooting on the Blue Ridge Parkway Tuesday.

The NPS said the shooting between two male individuals traveling the parkway occurred at approximately 10:30 AM, near milepost 116.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

One subject, whose name will be released pending next of kin notification, has died as a result of injuries sustained.

The second subject, 56-year-old Keith Sidwell, is currently being held by investigators.

NPS said Sidwell called 911 to immediately report the shooting incident. Once rescuers were on scene, the second subject was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The FBI and National Park Service will be the lead investigative agencies with assistance from Roanoke County CID.

United States Attorney Thomas Cullen released the following statement:

The FBI, the National Park Service, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia are investigating today’s fatal shooting on the Blue Ridge Parkway near mile marker 116. Because the Commonwealth of Virginia has concurrent jurisdiction over the Parkway, this federal investigative team is working in close consultation with the Roanoke County Police Department and the Roanoke County Commonwealth’s Attorney. The investigative team will collect all available evidence and will ensure that the investigation is fair, thorough, and impartial. As this is an ongoing investigation we are not able to comment further at this time.

UPDATE: 2:15 p.m.

The National Park Service said the parkway will remain closed between mile marker 121 and 112 through the end of the day as the investigation continues into Wednesday morning.

This is a closure to all types of use.

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, Va. (WSET) -- The National Park Service said a road rage incident led to a shooting that sent one to the hospital Tuesday.

The shooting happened on the Blue Ridge Parkway at MP 116.5 around 10:15 a.m.

National Parks said it was a road rage incident between two men.

They said the alleged shooter called police to let them know someone was hurt.

The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and the alleged shooter was taken into custody.

Right now, the parkway is closed for an investigation.
