North Carolina man charged in deadly Pittsylvania Co. hit-and-run

Virginia State Police have arrested a suspect in connection to a fatal hit-and-run in Pittsylvania County.

Mckinley Thorpe, Jr. of Roxboro, N.C., has been charged with one felony count of failure to stop at the scene of a traffic crash.

The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 58, in the 2400 block of South Boston Road.

A 2004 Honda CRV had become disabled on Route 58. Tabitha Hazelwood, 33, and Lenise Snead, 62, were attempting to push the car in the right lane of the road when they were hit from behind by a 2021 Honda Accord.

The driver of the Accord, Thorpe, then ran away from the scene on foot. He was later arrested on Friday and is being held without bond at the Pittsylvania County Jail.

Hazelwood was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment for serious injuries. Snead died from her injuries at the scene.
