Drivers charged in multiple tractor trailer accident on I-81, sending 1 to hospital

UPDATE: 11:45 a.m. - The drivers involved in the multiple tractor trailer crash on I-81 in Botetourt County on Wednesday morning have been charged.

Police say the crash occurred at 3:12 a.m. at the Troutville Rest Area entrance ramp when a National Carriers tractor trailer was traveling south on I-81. The truck ran off the right side of the roadway striking four other tractor trailers, which were parked on the exit ramp leading into the southbound rest area.

Alexander C. Stevens, 31, of Arizona, the driver of the National Carriers tractor trailer, fell asleep while driving when the truck ran off the roadway hitting the other tractor trailers.

Stevens was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening in injuries. He has been charged with reckless driving, according to police.

The drivers of the other four tractor trailers, which were parked on the rest area exit ramp, were also charged in the crash with parking on the interstate.

The right travel lane has reopened after being closed for several hours.


UPDATE: 6:57 a.m. - Virginia State Police are investigating a multiple tractor trailer accident sending one person to the hospital Wednesday morning in Botetourt County.

Four tractor trailers were involved in the accident and a fifth truck that was driving by hit debris. They then had to pull off at a weigh station.

The person sent to the hospital suffered minor injuries, but Hazmat is still on the scene cleaning up after one of the trucks spilled out a big batch of hot dogs.

The south right lane and right shoulder are currently closed, according to VDOT.

State Police say the right lane should be back open by 11 am.


BOTETOURT Co., Va. (WSET) - Police are on the scene of a multiple tractor trailer accident in Botetourt County Wednesday morning.

Virginia State Police say the accident happened at around 3 a.m. at the Troutville rest stop.

People traveling along I-81 South could see some delays in the area, according to Virginia 511.
