There are three Republican candidates vying for a single seat to represent the 56th district in the House of Delegates.

The three candidates are Kevin Bailey, Jennie Wood, and former Congressman Tom Garrett.

All three are similar by principle, said Bailey, but have some issues that each is passionate about.

Bailey is pro-life, pro-law enforcement, and pro-Constitution. However, he said the most important thing he wants folks to know about him, is he is a regular guy.

"I'm not a politician. I'm just a regular guy that owns a farm here in Appomattox, that practices law, [and] is an elder at the church. That's who I am and that's who I'm going to be," said Bailey.

Tom Garrett is a former Congressman who is eager to get back into the political space, after a four-year hiatus. During that time, he focused on sobriety and his commitment to his family and friends.

"This is the hardest statement that I have ever publicly made, by far. It's also the truth," said Garrett in 2018 when announcing he would not seek re-election.

Now, he's ready to get back to a career in service.

"If the good Lord wills it and the voters of the 56th district of the Virginia House of Delegates will have me, in one year, we're going to find out just how good I can be," said Garrett.

Garrett said his conservative values remain, but he is prepared to reach across the aisle, in hopes of a more bipartisan system.

Jennie Wood is a single mother of two young girls. She is also the daughter of an immigrant, who she said, is the definition of the American Dream. She said her father built a business here while making sure his family in Brazil had food on their tables. She said this has been a motivator for both her career working in political non-profits and now as she seeks this new adventure.

"I've seen the alternative, and I believe in standing up for the little people who can't stand up for themselves," said Wood.

Wood said she's been out in the community listening to what issues you care about.

"I want to keep our government in check. You know, I want to keep our government small. I want our taxes to stay low. I want to fight this inflation," said Wood.

The newly redistricted 56th region stretches from Appomattox to Short Pump.

Primary elections will take place on June 20.
