MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- The City of Martinsville says a maintenance worker has died after an accident Tuesday morning.

City officials said Tony Davis, a long-time Public Works employee was operating a tractor mower on Corn Tassel Trail around 10:30 a.m., just south of the intersection with Sams Lions Trail, when a tree fell from the side of the road onto the cab of the tractor.

Officials said the tractor kept going and eventually hit broke a utility pole and came to a stop on the opposite side of the street.

Martinsville Fire & EMS responded to the scene and helped transport Davis to the Emergency Room where he later died from his injuries.

The accident is under investigation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Davis family at this most difficult time,” noted City Manager Leon Towarnicki, “as well as with friends and co-workers. Tony was well-liked around the City Shop and we are all greatly saddened by this tragic loss.”
