Man shot by victim after hiding out behind home, assaulting her and her father

Jesse Carter, 36, was released from the hospital later Wednesday morning when he was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and battery, brandishing a firearm, possessing a firearm and violating the protective order (BRRJ)

BEDFORD Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Bedford County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man they said was hiding behind a woman's home and grabbed her by the neck when she went outside.

The sheriff's office said they got a 911 call just after midnight on Wednesday, August 15 from Shady Grove Drive where a woman said she heard someone outside of her home.

The woman called her father, who lives next door, to also tell him.

When her father showed up, they both checked around the outside of the home, where they found Jesse Carter hiding outside behind the air conditioning unit.

The woman said Carter grabbed her around the neck, causing her to drop the handgun she was carrying after she shot him twice.

After a struggle, the victim said she was able to run away.

The sheriff's office said Carter, the ex-boyfriend of the caller, then assaulted her father.

Both Carter and the father went into the house, where Carter grabbed another handgun from the victim's purse and went back out into the yard with it.

The caller then told investigators that when Carter walked around the house, he pointed the gun at her.

Investigators and EMS crews were able to get to the scene where Carter was then taken to the hospital in Roanoke for two non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The father of the victim was also taken to the hospital due to having chest pains.

The sheriff's office said Carter was served with a protective order on Monday, August 13 ordering him to have no contact with her.

Carter, 36, was released from the hospital later Wednesday morning when he was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and battery, brandishing a firearm, possessing a firearm and violating the protective order.

He's being held in the Bedford Adult Detention Center without bond.

The investigation of this incident is ongoing and further charges are possible.
