Police and school administration are investigating the incident, the district said.

"Roanoke City Public Schools has a zero-tolerance policy about weapons in school, including anything resembling a weapon," the district said. "We ask parents and guardians to speak with their children to make sure they understand this policy and that if students see something, to always say something."

The Roanoke Police Department said a firearm and damage from the shooting were found in the bathroom.

A juvenile male student was taken into custody, according to police.
