LU gives peek into progress of new state-of-the-art shooting range
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Liberty University let several folks into their new state-of-the-art shooting range Friday, to get a look at the progress its made on the facility.
The new $3.2 million shooting range is set to have five different venues including a pistol range, a rifle range, an instructional area, and a three-gun competition range, with future plans for an indoor firing range, according to the proposal submitted last December.
The proposal also listed that the shooting range will include several different types of shooting facilities, as well as classroom space, awards pavilions and storage areas.
Liberty said it has a lot of construction left to do on the facility, but wanted to give friends an opportunity to see what has been done to date and meet the students.
"It's just a great draw for the university, for the area, for Lynchburg. The Campbell County, Amherst County, police departments want to use it," said Bill Morris, a consultant for the range.
The shooting range will be where the LU shooting team will be able to call home.
"Our belief is so strongly in our youth and especially in progressing the second amendment and protecting that," said Hanri Kaya, CEO of Zenith Firearms.
According to the proposal, the shooting range would be the first National Rifle Association-approved facility on a U.S. college campus. It would also be the first NCAA-certified outdoor shooting range on a college campus that would accommodate all of the Olympic shooting sports.
The shooting range will be open to the public and local law enforcement, but will be geared toward students.
