18-year-old high school student killed in head-on collision in Amherst County

AMHERST Co., Va. (WSET) -- Amherst County Public Safety officials say a high school student was killed in an accident in Amherst County Monday afternoon.

Director of Public Safety, Gary Roakes, said a call came in around 4:50 p.m. for an accident that happened just past Temperance Elementary School on Route 778.

Virginia State Police said Kaylynn N. Gardner, 18, of Amherst was driving south on Route 778, near the intersection of Route 627 when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Freightliner Columbia 120 tractor trailer.

Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said she was not wearing her seatbelt.

No charges have been placed and police said the crash is still under investigation.
