Lanes re-open after hazmat spill, on I-81 in Rockbridge Co.
UPDATE: According to VDOT, all lanes have been re-opened.
ROCKBRIDGE Co., Va. (WSET) -- According to Virginia 511, a disabled tractor trailer is causing delays after a hazmat spill.
The south right lane and right shoulder are closed at I-81 mile marker 203.9.
Traffic is being diverted off of I-81 South onto US-11 and back onto I-81 South.
Officials with Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue said one lane of I-81 has been closed since 10:45 p.m. Thursday.
They said organic peroxide and sodium hydroxide was leaking from a barrel on the truck.
According to State Police, the truck had to brake suddenly, which caused the load to shift inside the trailer, causing the spill.
Hazmat teams offloaded the remaining product to a new container.
A special clean-up crew from Staunton was required to come to the scene.
Officials said most of the materials are cleaned up and contained to the trailer.
Crews said it should be a few more hours before it is cleared.
There is no threat to the public.
