Giving Tuesday can support the needs of local organizations
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Giving Tuesday, November 28th, is focused on giving money to charities and non-profits who help our local communities as well as across the world.
And local non-profits in Central Virginia were looking forward to the day.
Mark Sheehan, who is the Executive Director of the Lynchburg Boys and Girls Club, said they are looking to build a new gym for kids to play in.
He shared that what they are currently using only has a nine-foot ceiling, so they are looking to expand.
"Right now we're looking to raise about $250,000 for our gym. We have about $121,000 towards that so we would love anybody to donate another $150, 000," Sheehan said.
The Lynchburg Humane Society is also looking to receive donations.
"If people could commit to helping one pet, we would so appreciate that," Lynchburg Humane Society Director of Development Julie Barger said.
They said the average cost for a pet under their care is $150 per animal, including food, shots, and being spayed or neutered.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is also matching up to $2 million in donations made on Facebook on Giving Tuesday.
