Friends and family gather to remember man killed in Lynchburg
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - Just days after a fatal shooting in Lynchburg, people came together to remember the man who was killed, 51-year-old Ricky Johnson, Sr.
Police say they found Johnson with gunshot wounds around 11:15 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Fillmore Street and 17th Street.
They say Johnson died at the scene.
Those closest to him held a vigil Thursday night and remembered a man with a big heart.
"He loved his grandkids; he loved his children. He was just a good brother to me," Johnson's sister Sharon Johnson said.
Family and friends are still in disbelief over what they call a senseless crime.
They lit candles, released baloons, and celebrated their memories with Johnson.
"He kept us laughing; full of joy and happiness, a hardworking man," Sharon said.
They say Ricky Johnson didn't deserve what happened to him, but they know what he would say if he was still here.
"He would say, 'I love you, sis. I love all of y'all.'"
His family and friends plan to do what he would want, "stick together as a family, take care of mom and dad, just be there, continue on and grow strong, take care of his kids, his grandkids."
His sister says they're looking for justice.
Johnson, Sr. leaves behind four children and four siblings.
The family is planning a private funeral service for him.
They're also asking anyone with information about his death to contact police.
