LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Due to a sinkhole on Fort Avenue, from Graves Mill Road to Fenwick Drive, the road is currently restricted to one lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions.
The City of Lynchburg said it strongly advises that commuters use alternate routes as it is anticipated that rush hour traffic congestion will be significant and they suggest rerouting to Wards Road and Route 460 to avoid Fort Ave.
Currently the city is coordinated with contractors, AEP, and Verizon to being road repairs and the Department of Water Resources is working to backfill the excavated area in order to protect the new water main and create a working platform for Verizon and AEP to complete repairs to their damaged utility duct banks.
Once repairs are completed, road construction can begin.
Assuming no delays due to weather or other unforeseen issues, construction should be complete and Fort Ave. reopened to traffic by Monday, August 28.
The Department of Water Resources said it will cost approximately $50,000 to fix the sinkhole.
