Forest couple on Royal Caribbean cruise where hundreds are sick from norovirus outbreak

Don and Trish Hicks of Forest, Virginia weigh in on the norovirus outbreak on their Caribbean cruise ship on January 11, 2019.

FOREST, Va. (WSET) -- It's not exactly what Forest residents Don and Trish Hicks had in mind when they planned to spend their 40th wedding anniversary on the Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas Cruise Ship.

As of Friday, at least 475 people have come down with the norovirus, a gastro-intestinal illness.

The couple did a FaceTime interview with ABC 13, sharing what passengers are dealing with, as the ship heads back to Port Canaveral, Florida a day early.

It's where they boarded on Sunday, along with roughly 9,000 other people, for a seven-day Caribbean cruise.

The Hickses have managed to avoid getting sick, but said those affected have to stay in their rooms, and everyone must use hand sanitizer.

Nonetheless, they said everyone is getting the royal treatment during the process, and they're all getting a full refund.

"It kind of taught us a lesson that our love has lasted for 40 years in high waves, low waves, and you know, and a cruise is a cruise," said Don Hicks.

They're also getting a free-night's hotel stay in Orlando before flying back to Virginia.
