SALEM, Va. (WSET) - Salem officials say the fire that roared through a storage unit facility and damaged 64 units caused $1.5 million in damage.

The fire happened at Apperson Self-Storage on August 1 just after 10:15 p.m.

Salem Fire & EMS officials say 60 of the 64 were heavily damaged, and contents of those units included several cars and motorcycles.

The Fire Marshal ruled the cause undetermined.

Officials say the investigation is finished unless new information is brought up.

The business owner sent out a letter to the tenants asking for patience while the company works through this difficult time.

The property says he believes the fire was caused by someone smoking in one of the units of the B building shortly before the fire caused.
