CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Talk about a surprise.
Emily Redding was in the middle of teaching a math class when the Superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools, Dr. Mark Miear, walked in, carrying flowers and balloons.
Redding says she thought he was congratulating her for being named Christiansburg High School's Teacher of the Year, so her jaw dropped when she learned he was congratulating for being the entire district's teacher of the year.
Redding has been a math teacher at Christiansburg High School for the past two years. She said she loves teaching the students and getting them excited about math.
Redding explained, "I realize that you have to think outside the box to be able to reach each one of them where they need to be reached. So, I always try to do as much real world math as possible so they see that math is in the real world. I make it as fun and engaging as possible."
Redding will now move on to the competition for Regional Teacher of the Year. If she wins that, she will continue to the statewide competition for Teacher of the Year.
