Thousands of people in the New River Valley will soon be able to receive healthcare thanks to a $2-million grant given to a local clinic.

Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner announced Thursday that the Community Health Center of the New River Valley was awarded the funding from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The clinic currently provides behavioral health, medical, and dental services to the area.

"This grant is really what allows us to do our mission. If we did not have this source of funding we would not able to serve the patients we serve," said Ashley Slagel-Perry, behavioral health program manager.

Slagel-Perry says they apply for the grant every three years but its never guaranteed.

In order to receive the grant, they have to prove that they are still carrying out their mission, using their resources, and helping the community.

Last year, the clinic served nearly 4,000 people, according to Slagel-Perry.
