23-year-old arrested in connection to murder on Leesville Road: Police

Campbell County law enforcement responded to the 1000 block of Leesville Road on Monday morning after a passerby reported an unconscious man.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office said they found a man dead behind the wheel upon arrival and are reporting it as a homicide.

On Monday evening, the sheriff's office identified the victim as 40-year-old Jason Marcus of Appomattox County.

The Sheriff's Office said they were called to the scene at 8:16 a.m.

On Tuesday evening the Campbell County Sheriff's Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of Marcus.

After extensive investigation, the Campbell County Sheriff's Office said they obtained charges on 23-year-old Deshawn Hamlett of Campbell County.

Hamlett was charged with second-degree murder, and use of a firearm, deputies said.

Deputies also said Hamlett was taken into custody after a vehicle pursuit that started in the town of Altavista and ended in the 5500 Block of Wards Road.

Hamlett is being held in the Lynchburg Detention Center without bond.

Deputies said further and upgraded charges are anticipated and this case remains under investigation.
