CAMPBELL Co., Va. (WSET) -- Brookville High School has a new field house named after their late principal Jim Whorley.
The school board voted earlier this week and approved naming the field house after the beloved principal. Jim Whorley served at Brookville for 14 years before he died in a tragic boating accident in 2008.
The school has wanted to build a field house to accommodate the many students that are involved in sports for years. They decided starting a campaign in Principal Whorley's honor would be a great way to honor his memory.
Over the last seven years they have collected $500,000.
The field house will serve football, baseball, soccer, tennis, and the track and field teams.
Principal Tom Cole says he's so thankful for this addition to the school.
"Its taken years to build the building because it has been done with donated money and we are very proud of the fact that we are going to have an approximately half a million dollar building and equipment inside of it, funded by our community and that is a good example of how this community supports this school," Cole said.
The school plans to hold a dedication ceremony for the field house during the start of this year's football season. They are still looking for more donations to furnish a locker room.
