BEDFORD Co., Va. (WSET) -- Bedford County's first microbrewery collected a silver medal for one of their brews.

Apocalypse Ale Works' Bro Head Fred, a Belgian quad style beer, was made in honor of the brewmanster's late brother Alex "Fred" John.

Breweries from all over the world sent in more than 6,000 beers representing over 100 different styles for the 2017 U.S. Open Beer Championship, which announced winners on Monday.

Judges for the competition were from England, Canada, and the United States.

"What an honor it is to win. It is even more special to have this beer recognized internationally. Brohead Fred was my brother, Alex John's nickname," stated Doug John, Apocalypse's brewmaster. "Sadly, he passed away two years ago at the young age of 53. Had he had a colonoscopy at 50, he would be alive today. I encourage everyone to support cancer awareness."
