CHESTERFIELD, Co., Va. (WSET)-- A family in Chesterfield is sharing a warning after tragically losing their 4-month-old to meningitis.

WTVR reports that four-month-old Killy Schultz died just a day after after developing a rash and spiking a fever on his way home from daycare.

His parents said they gave him Tylenol, but when that did not work, they took him to an emergency room at a nearby hospital.

They said Killy's condition worsened and was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.

“He was still trying to make little sounds, but he had a hard time opening his eyes and his blood pressure was very low. He wasn’t doing well at all,” his mother, Alex Dempsey, said.

Doctors informed Dempsey that their infant had most likely contracted meningitis, just two days after he received his four-month-old vaccinations.

A day later, Killy passed away.

His family said the Virginia Department of Health is investigating and provided them with information on steps they have taken for those exposed.

“If anything comes out of this we want people to be aware that vaccinations can prevent things like this. Vaccines aren’t just for kids they’re for adults too. He was just a baby, so he really didn’t have much of a chance,” Dempsey said.

The family has created a GoFundMe page for Killy's funeral.
