25-year-old dies after vehicle hits fire hydrant, goes over embankment in Carroll Co.

A 25-year-old is dead following a crash in Carroll County on May 6.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened at 12:15 a.m. on Route 743, less than a mile south of Route 956.

A 2013 Dodge Dart was traveling north on Rt. 743 when it came into a curve and ran off the right side of the road.

Police said the driver overcorrected, which caused the vehicle to slide off the left side of the road. The vehicle then struck a fire hydrant, went over an embankment, and overturned.

The driver, Jerry K. Stafford, 25, of Hillsville, Va., was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to VSP.

He was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, where he succumbed to his injuries on May 19.
