Meet the Candidates: 9th Congressional District

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Tuesday is Primary Election Day and two candidates are vying for your vote in the Democratic nomination from the 9th District.

The winner of the election will face Rep. Morgan Griffith in November.

Meet the candidates:

Anthony J. Flaccavento

Anthony J. Flaccavento is a Southwest Virginia native who is a farmer and an entrepreneur. He currently lives on the outskirts of Abingdon on old tobacco that he and his wife, Laurel converted to an organic vegetable farm.

Here is where Flaccavento stands on the key issues:

  • HEALTHCARE - Flaccavento believes Medicaid expansion is important so that the working poor, young people and elderly people in nursing homes receive quality care.
  • EDUCATION - Flaccavento wants to dramatically reduce student debt through a combination of increased public and private grants, options for repayment through community service and reigning in of for-profit colleges. He also believes community college should be free.

Justin D. Santopietro

Justin D. Santopietro is a Southwest Virginia native who works in financial services. He was hired s a Regulatory Policy Analyst at the Credit Union National Association and later promoted, all while being their youngest employee.

Here is where Santopietro stands on the key issues:

  • TAX FAIRNESS - Santopierto believes in reducing the tax burden on work, employment, and production, and shifting it towards social ills. He has created a plan to lower tax rates and make the tax system easier to understand.
  • GUN RIGHTS - Santopierto believes in improving the existing background check system so that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.
